INTRODUCTION. I discovered Robert Wicks when I heard him interviewed. He was talking over the radio about overcoming anxieties and helping others at the same time. A book that Wicks wrote is called Streams of Contentment. I ran out and bought it – one of the best self-help books I’ve read in a long time. I wrote a blog about this — click HERE to read.RIDING THE DRAGON.Now I’m reading another small book by Robert J. Wicks called Riding the Dragon. The sub-title says, Ten lessons for inner strength in troubling times. His concept is simple: don’t hide from the dragon (your troubles) but instead face the dragon head on, get on its back and ride it!A… More

WHATS IN THIS BLOG: • Fish Creek beach. • A little like heaven. • Tragedy at Independence, Kansas. • The process of pain. • Any good purpose for the trials of life?
Fish Creek, Wisconsin is a tiny village pregnant with tourists in Door County – a finger of land that sticks out into Lake Michigan about a hundred miles north of Chicago.
FISH CREEK BEACH. I’m typing up my thoughts on my deck at 3 pm. Across the road is a beach. It’s not a man’s beach like in Australia with enormous waves crashing on miles of golden sand, and tanned surfer-hunks on the watch for rip tides.… More

WHATS IN THIS BLOG: • What is helpless prayer? • Methods. • Examples.
Helpless prayer means when you are feeling helpless. Or desperate. It’s easy enough to pray when our emotions are normal. But what if we are so racked with anxiety that we can hardly think straight, let alone compose a spiritual prayer. Or maybe we can’t stop crying. What can we do then?
Here are some methods that I have gathered over the years. Methods to approach God when we feel helpless. You might not agree with some of these, and that’s okay. I invite you to share your methods if you have different ones.… More

Anxiety treatment – An Astonishing Alternative – About three years ago, I had an atrial fibrillation (AFib) while in California. My heart rate was 120 beats per minute for two days and a night. I knew this was dangerous, as it can induce stroke. I flew back to ABQ to see my heart doctor. He checked my vitals, did a running EKG, and gave me a scrip to counteract the symptoms. Also told me to keep away from caffeine and stress. Ha! The caffeine I could do without, but the stress…..? The full story of my stress-anxiety challenge is below as a Post-Script, which is optional reading.… More

One evening this week, I was feeling sorry for myself. After visiting the dermatologist. I came home with two blood-red biopsy scars on my nose…about an inch apart. And a lot of allergies from the budding cottonwood trees meant I had to handle my runny nose with TLC. My nose looked gruesome after I ditched the band-aids. Dang it, despite this I am gonna go to the local church meeting.
There must have been 700 people in the auditorium when the first song lit up the stage. Lean on Me. An old favorite which boosted my spirits right there. The words and tune spoke to me (see words below).… More

I asked Shanessa’s daughter, who is 17, what are the secrets to greater happiness. She gave me a quick list: • More freedom. My parents are too strict. • More friends ‘liking’ my posts on Facebook. • Live more like the models and superstars in the checkout mags and on TV. • Date more often. • Nicer car. • More movies and less schoolwork. • An iPad.
At the other end of the age spectrum, I asked a heart doctor, who is probably 70 and jogs several times each week. He said Mindfulness was one secret for destressing and happiness. When I asked what Mindfulness was, he gave an example.… More
