A magical snowfall in Albuquerque gets me reminiscing.

SNOWFALL IN ALBUQUERQUE.
The weather gurus predicted a big snowstorm that would last 3 days…. unheard of in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It started in the afternoon and by bedtime we had several inches. I took the first photo at 6 am using the deck light. Amazingly, the depth of snow was 15 inches, and on top of a small table it looked like a super-large Italian cream cake.

Upper deck of my house at 6 am.

When daylight emerged, I walked outside in my bedroom slippers, treading slowly on icy walkways, and took a few other shots – see below. This was the heaviest snowfall I have seen in 13 years of living in Albuquerque

LOS ALAMOS IN 1972.
I had seen a heavier snowfall once, in 1972 when I moved to Los Alamos from Australia. They got 30 inches (two and a half feet) of snow and the whole town shut down. Including Los Alamos National Laboratory where I worked for one year studying cosmic rays from the sun.

On the street where I live in ABQ.

Friends Tom and Shirley had invited us over for supper, so we stayed the night, and the next night, before we could get the car out. It was glorious fun frolicking in that much snow.

BUILDING A SNOWMAN IN KANSAS.
At another time I was staying with my American family in Independence, Kansas. Grandchildren Kara was 12 and Jaden was 10 years old. Dennis was boarding at Mary Ann’s house. We set about building a snowman, and it was a beauty. Tall and handsome and realistic, and many drive-by folks said it was the best in town.

AS WHITE AS SNOW.
I’m also reminded of one of the great prophets of old, Isaiah, who said, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow…”

He was talking in metaphors to rebellious Israelites about 700 years BC. The 2700 year-old metaphors are dramatic but still relevant. I’ve seen many times, and experienced it myself, the transformation when men and women come to God, realize he loves them, and are cleansed and renewed. It’s a magical experience too.

In the house next door, spears of a Spanish Bayonet covered in snow.

Snow has always been a special joy for me, since I was raised in South Australia where it rarely snowed, perhaps once in seven years.

Postscript: Its one day later and the snow starts to melt, leading to huge icicles outside my bedroom window. This bony icy hand is gonna give me nightmares, I’m sure of it.

“Come now, let us settle the matter,”
says the LORD.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.
If you are willing and obedient,
you will eat the good things of the land;
but if you resist and rebel,
you will be devoured by the sword.”
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

[Book of Isaiah, chapter 1.]

Thanks for beautiful photos of snow, Ian. You got a lot more snow than we did just 10 miles east of you at I-25 and Paseo delivered Norte.

Really lovely photos Ian. Here in Hobart Australia, we are coming into what is predicted to be a wet summer. Take care. Chris Potts
