Neurosurgeon spent six days in Heaven

Eben Alexander is a successful neuro-surgeon in the USA who has taught at universities such as Harvard Medical School. He used to refute with logic claims of out-of-body experiences…….that is until he had one himself. In 2008 he suddenly became ill with intense lower back pain, and quickly slipped into a coma that lasted for seven days.

It was a rare form of bacterial meningitis, and left him with an inactive cranial cortex…….not malfunctioning, but shut down. The cortex is the part of the brain that controls thought and emotion, i.e. consciousness.

“I was in a place of clouds. Big, puffy, pink-white ones that showed up sharply against the deep blue-black sky”. He also goes on to describe “Flocks of transparent, shimmering beings arced across the sky, leaving long, streamer-like lines behind them” **

With his cortex shut down, there could be no words, no language, as all of that was wiped out by the meningitis. Gone was all human identity, and existence. Yet a new kind of brain-free consciousness occurred during his visit to Heaven.

He felt a warm summer breeze. Then saw an orb of light in a coal-black void. He sensed a warm divine presence. He also heard “We will teach you many things, but you will go back”.

Alexander also says he encountered and understood unconditional love, and a divine spark within every human.

Quoting from globalgrind.com (10 October 2012):
‘While there, he saw a beautiful woman that had very blue eyes and golden brown hair, floating on the wings of butterflies, and she assured him: “You are loved and cherished, dearly, forever… you have nothing to fear”.

“My near-death experience, however, took place not while my cortex was malfunctioning, but while it was simply off. There is absolutely no way that I could have experienced even a dim and limited consciousness during my time in the coma….. much less the hyper-vivid and completely coherent odyssey I underwent.

As far as I know, no one before me has ever traveled to this dimension (a) while their cortex was completely shut down, and (b) while their body was under minute medical observation, as mine was for the full seven days of my coma”. Dr. Alexander explains that in this dimension we are “much more than our brains and bodies”.’

You can read the full story in his book Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the AfterLife (to be published 23 October). Meanwhile see Newsweek’s latest issue with the headline “Heaven Is Real: A Doctor’s Experience Of The Afterlife”.

With Tim Tebow in the sporting scene, and the book Heaven is 4 Real, as well as this astonishing story, it appears that God is nudging people a little more strongly these days….. toward Heaven and toward a living faith.

P.S. For more about butterflies in Heaven, please see my last blog called What Heaven may be like. That was written before I learned about the neuro-surgeon’s story…..what a strange coincidence!

The Gray Nomad.
Probing the practice of Christian believers….

“For God so greatly loved and prized the world that He gave up his Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world in order to judge or condemn the world; but that the world might find salvation and be made safe and sound through Him” (Amplified Bible). DOESN’T THIS SOUND LIKE WHAT THE GOLDEN-HAIRED WOMAN TOLD THE NEURO-SURGEON?

There’s an old saying: “A person with an experience is never at the mercy of a person with an argument”. The surgeon’s story seems to offer a rare perspective joining both scientific analysis and personal experience. I’ve heard other stories of “out of body” experiences, but apparently few have been written up. Look forward to hearing more of this.

Great quote Neil….I have never heard that one. Some scientists have stated that an out-of-body experience can be attributed to cortex activity. But in the surgeon’s case, his cortex was inactive (as monitored by medical machines). And the consciousness he experienced while in coma (eg, feeling the warm summer breeze)could NOT have been due to his own cortex (the seat of thinking and emotions). It had to have been a consciousness beyond his own mind-body. That’s why he calls his experience a proof of heaven.

Will definitely read his book. Yes the Lord is making Himself known in more direct ways in these days in which we are living!!!

Yes Jules, I think your words “more direct ways” are key. Now I want to look for other examples of this….pls let me know if you hear of any.
